Whispering Pines is a contemporary house of airy octagonal rooms grouped around an open, central great room, in the renowned Teton Pines development. A thick border of fir, pine and aspen screens Whispering Pines from its neighbours, while the view in front is wide open to the pastures and foothills beyond. The two-storey great room is ringed with windows and a stone fireplace rises up through the vaulted, 26' cedar ceiling. A small wet bar is a step up from the living room, as is the soundproof media room – where a big couch and a wide-screen TV wait.
The dining room and kitchen share a space divided by a stone-topped bar. The views from the dining room windows arc up to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, the gondola’s destination. The gourmet kitchen is outfitted in natural pine cabinets and gray-green granite countertops, and has its own merry little fireplace. A gas range is set in a centre island, while double ovens stand opposite; and a piano sits in a windowed alcove just off the kitchen. When the weather is fine, the picnic table on the wide green lawn offers another spot to hold meals or festivities; or take cocktails out to the terrace – accessed easily from living room, study, master bedroom or kitchen.
Whispering Pines’ rounded, high-ceilinged master suite is on the first floor, with a stone gas fireplace, double walk-in closets, and a whirlpool and steam room in the private bath. The master suite is walled in windows, and has a door to the deck and hot tub.
A separate stairway leads to Whispering Pines’ large, newly constructed guest wing. Here are two more bedrooms – simple, peaceful, comfortable – and a family room, where a flat screen TV is hidden inside panelling over the fireplace, and doors open to the terrace. Each bedroom has a luxurious bathroom tiled in travertine marble, with a glass-walled shower and bronze fixtures.
From the foyer, a grand staircase climbs to the second story bridge, which spans the great room on its way to two upstairs guest rooms – one with a queen bed and two bunk beds, perfect for children or teens; the other private, cheerful and sunny, with a great vaulted ceiling and a queen size sleigh bed. Double glass doors open to the balcony and both second floor bedrooms have private baths.
A wood-and-stone terrace, 1,000 square feet in all, wraps around the house, with wide bays that extend over the lawn and hold outdoor seating and dining areas and a six-person hot tub. The house is well-equipped to handle the gear and laundry resultant to any kind of outdoor adventure: between the three-car garage and the kitchen is a powder room, a mud room with shelves and cubbies and a stone-floored laundry room with washer, dryer and a deep sink.
Whispering Pines’ location in The Pines gives it access to superb golf, tennis, swimming, restaurants and miles upon miles of hiking, biking, snowshoe and ski trails. There are ponds and streams to fish in, and the rolling Teton Pines golf course becomes a fantastic cross-country ski touring centre in winter. The Pines has a little village centre – with a market, a dry cleaners and a flower shop, among other attractions – that is just a quick bike ride from the house on a safe, paved road. But perhaps best of all, Whispering Pines is only six miles from Teton Village and Jackson Hole’s famed, epic ski slopes – but offers space, peace and privacy that can’t be found within the village. The entrance to Grand Teton National Park is a mere ten minutes from Whispering Pines’ driveway. Whispering Pines is a gracious, welcoming, and luxurious house, an inspiring home base for discovering the great wonderland of Jackson Hole.
