River Hollow is a fairy-tale-like log house in a forest of cottonwoods, where mountains are glimpsed through the trees. The owner’s welcoming spirit can be felt within – in the striking oils and antiques, in the fireplace modelled on an ancestral Scottish hearth, in the intriguing collection of books on the shelves. A sunken kitchen has a dark blue ceramic Aga stove – which stays on all the time – and a counter that is at table-height for people in the two-story Great Room.
A music room with piano, a solarium, an office and a full bath comprise the rest of the first floor. Three bedrooms are on the second floor – one is a master suite with a carved-wood canopy bed, double writing desks, a balcony, a bedroom sink, and bathroom with soaking tub – the other two perfect for children, with bunk beds or a twin bed, and a shared bath. A glass-enclosed walkway off of the kitchen and living area leads to a garage, a light-filled game room and a wonderful, fully outfitted two-bedroom private apartment.
Outside, rocking chairs on the long back porch look out to the five wooded acres of the property, where moose and fox are familiar visitors. A few minutes’ walk takes you to the three-mile Snake River levee, while a short drive gets you to either Jackson or Teton Village. As sumptuous, central and private as a house can be.
