This unique and magnificent property, originally an ancient fortress, offers guests the chance to experience a truly authentic medieval atmosphere, as lived by a noble Umbrian family in the 1300s. It is situated in a valley, close to Foligno, and approximately 40 kms south west of Perugia. The property includes the remains of a chapel and a crenellated stone tower, about 32 metres high, which dominates the valley. Foligno was subjected to wars throughout much of the 13th century, until 1305, when it was seized by a powerful Guelph family, and subsequently reached the height of its wealth. In the 15th century, because of the family’s patronage of the arts, it became a centre of art. As a result of the many years of warfare, there are few original remains of the walls of the property, but in the course of renovations, valuable remains of a church have been found, including part of a 14th century crucifixion.
The property consists of two buildings, linked by a large terrace. On five different levels, all rooms are equipped with an underfloor heating and air conditioning system. The televisions all have plasma screens and satellite channels, and all bedding is of the highest quality. There is also wi-fi internet access throughout.
The kitchen, on the first floor, has a high exposed beam ceiling and is furnished with an antique table, walnut and oak kitchen cabinets and a collection of copper and ceramic kitchen utensils, attractively displayed on the walls. The room opens to a terrace furnished with tables and chairs and terracotta pots of flowers, wonderful for relaxing in the sunshine during the day, or for evening meals. A staircase leads up from the kitchen to the tower, with a living room dominated by a huge fireplace. There is also a TV room with comfortable seating and a stereo. The four bedrooms are filled with atmosphere with exposed stone walls and ceiling beams, and modern, very well equipped bathrooms.
