Casa di Nello is one of three villas situated on a large wine and olive oil producing estate close to the picturesque walled hilltop town of Cortona. Founded by the Etruscans, Cortona was a major seat of power during medieval times. It cobblestone streets lead to the Medici fortress and the Santuario di Santa Margherita, its highest church, from where there are magnificent views over the countryside. Cortona hosts the Umbria Jazz Festival in July and a large antique furniture market in August and September. More recently, it has become well known as the setting for Frances Mayes’ book, ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’, and the author’s house can be seen from our property. Although 8 kilometres away by car, guests can choose to enjoy a scenic 2 kilometre walk to the centre of Cortona.
Casa di Nello is situated higher than the other two villas about 325 yards to the right of the main villa of the property, occupied by the owner. The other two villas (Casa di Orlando and Casa di Liliana) are in completely different areas, making the three properties very private, yet also suitable for larger groups, or three families wanting to travel together. Each villa also has its own private garden and swimming pool, and all enjoy spectacular views over the countryside. The pool at Casa di Nello is small and quite shallow (7.5 x 3.5, 140 cm deep) and is situated to the side of the house in a lovely position among the olive groves. Outside the house is a covered dining area with pizza oven and barbecue.
Renovated in 2001, the house is on three floors with a living room on both the ground and first floors. The rooms have been very tastefully decorated and furnished, yet retaining the original features of tiled floors, beamed ceilings and fireplaces. The bathrooms are particularly attractive with mosaic or stone basins and good quality fittings. Amenities include air conditioning (in three of the bedrooms), heating, washing machine, satellite TV, DVD and internet connection. Please note that the internet connection is sometimes not very good at the house, in which case guests can use the owner's office. The estate’s olive oil and wine can be purchased by guests and the owner will also arrange a cook on request, for arrival meals and during the stay. At the property there is also a Limonaia suitable for a party for a maximum of 32 guests, and a chapel available for rent. A further independent single bedroom, with outdoor access only, is available on request.
