The Skiathos Villa Book
Greece
|
Skiathos is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group of islands and is about 12 kms long and 6 kms wide. The coastline is characterized by numerous peninsulas , inlets and long sandy beaches, widely considered to be some of the best in the Aegean. The interior is hilly and much of it consists of pine forests. The main town of Skiathos and the airport are located in the north east of the island, while the islands best beaches are in the south.
Our villas here are near Troulos Beach, in the south of the island. The long, sandy beach here, slopes gently into the sea, and is great for families. There are watersports available and also boat rental, as well as a beach tavern and a snack bar. The town of Troulos, a few minutes drive inland offers supermarkets, bars and tavernas. For those looking for a livelier night out, Skiathos town is just 10 kms away by bus or car, and the very popular Koukounaries beach is just 5 minutes away to the west. Surrounded by olive groves and attractive countryside, Troulos is also known for its walks, including a track to the north coast Aselinos beach which takes approximately one hour, and a longer 90 minute walk to Mikro Aselinos beach, passing the Kounistria Monastery.
Other interesting places to visit include the house of Alexander Papadiamantis, author or Tales from a Greek Island, and one of Greece’s finest modern novelists. The small town of Kastro is a two hour walk from Skiathos town on a good pathway and, although the town is now in ruins, eight of it original Byzantine churches still stand. Most of the monasteries on Skiathos date back to the time of Turkish occupation and, perhaps the nicest one to visit, is Evagelistria, in a pretty setting above a gorge, 450 feet above sea level. It is an hour’s walk from town and can also be reached by car or moped.
