Greece
|
The island of Patmos is considered as the holy island of the Dodecanese because "Ioannis the Evangelist" lived here for two years in a cavern between the monastery and the harbour. He wrote about this cavern in the Revelation. Founded in the 11th century, the monastery was fortified as a castle to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids. In the major town and port and port of Skala, the remains of the ancient Acropolis can be seen.
Just 4.5 kms from Skala is Chora, the capital of Patmos, built on a high hill around the old monastery. It is charming, traditional town which flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries , when beautiful mansions were built. Now the mansions are interspersed with typical white-washed Aegean style houses, white chapels, narrow alleys, flowered courtyards, restaurants and tavernas. Chora is the location of the villa we have to rent on Patmos. The nearby village of Grikos is also beautiful and has a some lovely tavernas where the delicious fresh local seafood can be enjoyed.
As well as the famous monastery, there are other impressive monasteries and churches dating from the Byzantine period, with beautiful frescoes and icons preserved. The island has been nominated by UNESCO as a monument of World Heritage. It is an island which combines history and traditions with relaxing holidays. There is a great choice of beautiful beaches, the most popular including Hochlakas, Psili Ammos and Merichas.
Patmos has regular ferry connections to the port of Pireaus, as well as Rhodes and other islands in the Dodecanese. There is no airport on the island, and the nearest airports are in Leros, Kos and Rhodes, from where it is possibly to take the hydrofoil or ferry to Patmos.
