The small island of Folegandros (32 km.²), has recently become fashionable as an island retreat offering a simple, relaxing and authentic Greek atmosphere, but it is still largely untouched by tourism. Recently featured in Condé Nast Traveller, it is described as ‘the ideal Greek hideway’ offering ‘a beautiful main town, small hotels, picturesque houses and secluded coves’. Like a lot of special places, it is not the easiest place to reach, situated in the southern Cyclades, between Sikinos and Milos, about 45 minutes from Santorini, by high speed ferry, or a 4 hour trip from Athens port/Piraeus. It is also on an inter-island ferry route with several other Cycladic islands.

There are just three small villages, Karavostasi (the port), the Chora and Ano Meria, which are connected by sealed roads, as is Agali Beach. The Chora, closed to car and motorcycle traffic, has its three, peaceful tree-shaded squares, the perfect place for a quiet drink or local meal. A walk to the church of Panaghia , on the top of a hill, offers a magnificent view over the village andthe west coast. The village of Ano Merià has several traditional tavernas, as does the island’s port, Karavostasi, a larger centre also with small hotels, restaurants and shops, and a nearby beach. This and Agali are the only beaches reachable by car. Excursion boats can be taken to other secluded beaches and coves, both sandy and pebble. Some of these can also be reached by walking or by moped. Although known for its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, still untouched by mass tourism, there are a number of activities available, including surfing, waterskiing, sailing, paragliding, diving, tennis and horse riding. There are also facilities for car rental, as well as motorbike, bicycle and boat rental.
