Built in the 18th century by the French poet and playwright François-Joseph de Lagrange-Chancel, this 56 hectare Chateau estate is still owned by his descendants. Its magical setting high in the valley and owning much of what is visible in the breathtaking views, makes the estate totally private. Within this peaceful setting are the gardens, set on three terraces below the Chateau; magnificent trees and formal gardens filled with perfumed roses and trimmed box hedges are on the first two terraces, with the fenced and security locked pool on the third terrace. The property then leads gently to the woods and meadows of the estate with innumerable paths and walkways; perfect for idyllic walks and picnics. The interior of the Chateau is light and airy, with all principle rooms and bedrooms having stunning views across the Dordogne valley. It has been tastefully decorated and furnished , combining family heirlooms with modern comforts. Amenities include Wi-fi(broadband) internet, telephone, CD player, satelite, television and DVD player. There is also a ping pong table at the property, children's toys and 5 bicycles (2 adult and 2 children). The property is perfectly situated in the heart of the Perigord Noir area of the Dordogne and is within 20 minutes drive of the famous medieval Chateaux of Castelnaud and Baynac, and Chateau Les Milands, which was once the home of Josephine Baker. The dramatic village of La Roque Gageac, which clings precariously to the cliff face, and the glorious gardens of Marqueyssac are also to be found close by. The village of Domme, said to be one of the most beautiful in France, is approximately 20 minutes away. Throughout the summer months the surrounding area also hosts a number of music, arts and medieval festivals. There are plenty of activities to do in the area as well such as hot-air ballooning, private wine tours & tastings at local vineyards, wine courses by an eminent wine professor, a private wine tour of St Emillion, truffle hunting and cookery lessons. There are a wide range of wonderful restaurants within easy reach of the Chateau serving a vast array of foods; from Haute-Cuisine to local specialities of duck, foie-gras, truffles and cheese. There are also wonderful colourful markets held each day in the surrounding villages where you can buy delicious local produce.
